WILD IN THE PEAKS - a JOHN MUIR DISCOVER AWARD
FOR THE AMERICAN SCHOOL IN LONDON
We’ve been working with The American School in London for 4 years, designing and delivering a bespoke wild adventure for thirty year 6 students in May.
This unique adventure runs over 4 days and 3 nights (including 2 nights camping) in The Peak District National Park. For the first time in 2024 students worked alongside Peak District National Park rangers on a valuable conservation project. This adventure enables all students to achieve their John Muir Discover Award.
This adventure involves our 'base camp model' that while being based in an inspiring and remote outdoor centre (sole use), also includes some incredible hiking and an over-night camp at a National Trust campsite.
Working together in small teams, the students have the opportunity to explore the Park, and the following themes and activities together:
SUSTAINABILITY: Traveling by coach and by foot only, considering land-use, responsible and conscious choices when it comes to food, wellbeing, and how we impact the environment (leave no trace)
CONSERVATION: Spending time with The Peak District National Park volunteer service, actively contributing to conservation of the land they are exploring
TEAMWORK & LEADERSHIP: Camp-craft, cooking and eating together in the wild, exploring roles and responsibilities for how they can work as a team, lead and support each other through practical 'real-life' scenarios
PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY + GROWTH: Understanding how to keep themselves safe and well in new environments within the context of a wild environment.
PLAY: Nature facilitation/connection and play, treasure hunts, games, enjoying being somewhere the students can express themselves by running, playing, climbing and exploring
MINDFULNESS: Awareness of our senses, morning yoga, wild swimming, gratitudes and journaling
"What a great experience. LOVED that there is a philosophy clearly articulated and so visible and felt during the experience. Your team are very special, yes as outdoor leaders, but also as educators"
Melanie, Teacher, ASL
